With the rise of vehicular thoroughfares, this phenomenon inhibits the already limited pedestrian space and attention. Designed in partnership with Marshalls (formerly Woodhouse), Geo solves this problem with cohesive aesthetic and engineering solutions that combine traditional elements to ensure the least amount of repetition.
Geo is a coordinated range of street furniture that aims to provide a coherent, elegant and minimal way of servicing public space in the city. A self-initiated project, it arose from the practice’s experience in upgrading the Upper Ground Spine route on the South Bank. It includes most elements of street furniture – from street lighting to public telephones, from bollards to benches – all based on the principle of minimising street clutter by utilising single posts to cluster as many items as possible.
The highest quality materials are chosen with the knowledge that installation is disproportionably costly in relation to the furniture. This material choice decreases routine maintenance and replacement and therefore minimises the total lifetime cost. Each element is designed for easy maintenance, security and cleaning. Geo furniture is designed to be neat, robust and minimal and above all, to age gracefully. It is the UK’s best-selling street furniture range, and as well as being used extensively on London’s key urban realm benchmark projects such as the South Bank and on Kensington High Street, it is used by almost all the London boroughs in some way, with excellent results.
