ILLUM was established in 1891 by A.C Illum, and has since been one of the leading department stores in Denmark. Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands were tasked with designing a concept fitting for an iconic department store in one of the worlds foremost design capitals.

Illum is located in Ostergarde 52, Copenhagen, the longest pedestrianised shopping area in Europe. The street is lined with high-fashion boutique shops, cafés, restaurants and department stores, including the famous Illum.

The form and graduating tone of the curved ceiling was inspired by the dazzling, free flowing light displays of the aurora. Using these curving forms allowed us to transition seamlessly from the atrium ceiling to the external spaces – blurring the boundaries between inside and out.

The project was completed in 2015.
