The hotel, for client AEG, takes The O2 as backdrop; the strong and carefully composed massing of the scheme arranges the primary components into a tight collection of objects, maintaining visual permeability to The O2 from western and southern approaches while expressing the individual functions of the building.
The prominent triple-height reception space is raised above ground, maximizing the spectacular views across the River Thames towards Canary Wharf and The City. Its transparency contrasts with the strong vertical expression of the hotel’s anodised aluminum and glass curtain walling façade. A 40 by 75m clear-span ballroom is set to be the largest bespoke space of its kind in London.
Planning permission was granted in 2011, and subsequently the project has been taken over by Queensgate Investments and Arora Hotels.
