It is based on three simple ideas: firstly remove unnecessary clutter; secondly install locally sourced high-quality paving with bespoke street furniture and finally configure the boulevards and public spaces to respond to the buildings that line them. Restoring simplicity and sensitivity to the streets and city squares will enable people to enjoy the public realm and to activate the areas with cafés, shops and public uses. The provision of 11 kilometers of new tram system necessitates working closely with the systems and integration engineers – the trams, signalling, furniture, lighting, graphics and finishes function together to express our vision for the city’s new urbanity.
Luxtram will provide enormous strategic improvements to the public transport network in Luxembourg. Reviving the original tram system, installed in 1859 and removed in the 1960s, will in itself provide huge environmental, urban, economic and social benefits, but beyond the lines themselves is an urban renaissance of the city’s streets and squares.
As architects of the line we have the further opportunity to rethink the city’s squares, working alongside the City of Luxembourg to achieve a new standard of urban space for Europe.
