This refurbishment of an existing 1950s educational building in London saw extensive internal remodelling  of the complex 59,000 sq ft building to include new services, WCs and lifts and the maximisation of highly flexible space for teaching, workshops and administrative offices to suit the newly formed Fashion Retail Academy.

The remodelling of the building’s reception – with local redesign of the external façade and entrance hall – provides a handsome entrance with a large reception and a much improved street presence.

The conversion of the space from a cellular, traditional educational facility to a modern, open and flexible space has been highly successful and completed with a relatively low budget.

The works form part of an overall masterplan, undertaken with Derwent London, which has seen the emergence of the area as a neighbourhood associated with fashion and the arts – using public space and pedestrian links to integrate the Academy with the surrounding businesses and social areas and featuring the practice’s award-winning Charlotte Building.
