Illuminated River switches on

Last night (17 July 2019), four of the Thames’s most famous bridges were transformed with the launch of the first phase of Illuminated River. Free to view, and accessible to all, Illuminated River is a symbol of London’s creativity, ambition and spirit. Leo Villareal’s artwork celebrates the architecture and heritage of London’s historic bridges, and will encourage more people to enjoy the river and the riverside at night. Artwork for the first four bridges will be seen more than 60 million times each year by Londoners and visitors alike.

In addition to the art, the Illuminated River Foundation is pleased to announce an extensive public programme to coincide with the launch of the first phase. From boat tours to exhibitions and new music commissions, the initiatives have been devised to celebrate London’s historic Thames bridges and reconnect people with the river.

Phase two to light the next five bridges is underway and scheduled to complete in 2020.
