The practice’s ‘Loose-Fit Architecture: Designing Buildings for Change’, published in September 2017, brought together 20 years of research from around the world on how best to future proof buildings and embodied carbon using design, legislative, economic and educational methods. The practice is committed to minimal carbon in new build and reuse wherever possible and we are project/practice winners of numerous sustainability and retrofit awards.
Sustainable communities are created by a combination of top-down and grassroots activities. Top-down elements include urban and landscape design – well-designed homes in gardens and parks, with places for work, shops and restaurants, leisure and worship. Ground-up elements derive from (future) residents and their social and economic context. We approach each project with an understanding of the social context and a respect for local people’s culture and preferences.
B Corp
Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands achieved B Corporation certification in 2026. The assessment was rigorous, examining how we operate across governance, people, community, and environmental impact. It took real commitment to work through every stage, but it also gave us a valuable chance to reflect on who we are as an organisation and how we do things day to day.
What’s especially encouraging is that we didn’t need to change the way we work to meet the standard. In most areas, our existing processes, decisions, and behaviours were already closely aligned with the principles behind B Corp. That doesn’t make the achievement any less significant – quite the opposite. It confirms that we’ve been building the right foundations over time, and that the way we already do business stands up to meaningful external scrutiny. We’re keen to keep improving in the years ahead as we work towards re-certification in 2029.
